The Qingming Festival, meaning “Pure Brightness Festival,” originated from ancient Chinese practices of ancestor worship and spring rituals. It combines the Cold Food Festival’s tradition of avoiding fire (to honor a loyal noble named Jie Zitui) with outdoor activities. By the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), it became an official festival.
